The Faint
ft. Natalie Portman's Shaved Head & Dr. Do
Warfield, San Francisco
8:00pm to 11:20pm

Got there right at 8. We got floor tickets, and I secured my spot at the top of the steps right behind a small balcony. I'm out of shape again, which means my back can't handle long durations of standing. Anyway, NPSH was actually pretty good...if you didn't watch them and if most of the time they did not sing. HAH. The girl of the band was wearing a shirt with her own face on it, and the only song she had a solo on was about her pony tail and it was terrible. The keyboardist danced like an idiot, the lead singer was ridiculously too animated and intense, and the guitarist looked like a 15 year old trying to be super trendy. Oh, and the drummer looked like Fred Flintstone in his weird shirt. They played til 8:40pm...I though the bad/ok openers was over and was looking forward to the next opener until....

9:00 came and a DJ came on. Cool, some nice simple beats. Then a guy who looked like Flavor Flav jumped on and started this rapping. God. Rap. And a THE FAINT concert!! WTH! Finally, the guy I didn't realize was Dr. Do until 10 minutes later (mainly because nobody else came on stage after him) came on with this shiny rag over his head. He wore it the whole time. It was so stupid. They rapped; they talked about sex and how it's cool to not use condoms; they had some stupid song with the lyrics "I followed you and I saw what you did"; they had another song that was creepy as hell about looking at a girl's parts or something. It was demeaning, really really bad rapping, and for the last half they were doing this kind of rap mix but it was live. It was soooo stupid. I wanted to kill myself.

The Faint came on at 10:05ish and played til 11 (encore til 11:15). THEY WERE AWESOMEE!!!!!!! The main guy has a really interesting voice when he doesn't sing...maybe he was kinda sick? I don't know. But he was cool and he was wearing a lab coat with these goggle glasses and danced really coolly. The keyboardist knew how to dance crazy and look cool. The bassist and guitarist were both head banging. The background had these cool black and white designs. They played all my favorite songs. They sound like how they sound on their cd, but better. Oh man. It was a pretty freaking awesome and fun show. I couldn't take my eyes off the lead singer I'm not sure why. The way he sang and moved was just too freaking cool!

My ears are still ringing this morning. No more shows lined up for this year, unfortunately...I know, what a dry year. It's okay..I'm going to a symphony on Friday. =)

Sigur Ros
Greek Theatre, Berkeley
Friday, October 3, 2008
8:00pm to 11:30pm

I forgot to post on this show. We got there at around 9:30ish, and Sigur Ros had already started. So first off, I don't think I've EVER seek the Greek Theatre THIS PACKED. It was insaneeeeeeee. Sigur Ros was godly. People were so into them. They played til around 11:30pm. It was supposed to rain, but for most of the show it was fine..until the encore, in which it really started to pour a bit so we got soaked. Well, I got soaked. Jack got his pants soaked because his leather jacket was waterproof but everything just dripped to his pants. haha. I didn't get a shirt because they didn't have my size anymore by the time I went to buy it. At the very end, they let out all this confetti, and the ending was really really cool. Sigur Ros. The voice was amazing. And the thick smell of weed did not stop the whole time.

Ladytron
ft. Delta Fiasco and Datarock
Fillmore, San Francisco
Tuesday, May 27, 2008
8:00pm to 11:30pm

FINALLY another show to enjoy. We got there right at 8, and of course I had to buy a t-shirt. Ladytron has some awesome freaking taste in designs.

Not expecting too much out of the openers since Jeff and I tend to have the worst luck in those, the show started off with Delta Fiasco..which turned out to be amazingly AWESOME! Reminded me of The Faint, but not as intense. Basically it was electronica pop, which is gloorrioussssssssssss. Man we were so impressed. Three guys—drummer, guitarist/keyboardist, singer/guitarist. The guitarist/keyboardist was flippin hawt. I couldn’t stop checking him out throughout the show, even when the other bands were on stage. Unfortunately, these guys only played for…TWENTY MINUTES! Man. That was a super sadface.

Anyway, so I guess two great openers was definitely too much to ask for. Datarock came on at around 8:45 and freaking played til 9:30. I wanted to DIE. It reminded me of those guys that sang the song “Whip It” but ten billion times crappy. I guess they’re pretty well known though because the crowd was going wild for them. They wore these red sweatpants/jumpsuits and these ridiculous sunglasses. Man I thought they were annoying. They all looked like they were 45. I think they said they were from Norway. They were crappy. That’s all I gota say.

Ladytron didn’t come on until around 10ish. Helen and Mira were hawt! Helen was hotter, I think. Their voices were awesome. This was the first kind of electronica show Jeff and I have ever been to, and now it won’t be our last. I can definitely describe Tegan and Sara as super indie, fun and cute; but Helen and Mira…it was like…they were really classy, proper, subtle, sexy, slightly gothic. Very interesting mood. Instead of really dancing (but then again Tegan and Sara don’t dance), they kinda have this choppy swaying that moves to the beat. I’m not sure how to describe it. But anyhow, Helen’s voice sounds a bit robotic and very feminine. If you’ve ever heard her on the cd, she sounds just like that. It’s so strange to hear that her voice really sounds like that. But it’s definitely an amazing voice. And they definitely put on one heck of a show. One of the best and most favorite shows I’ve been to. Very enjoyable and the crowd wasn’t that annoying. Well, there WAS a fight in the beginning and I DID see one of the ugliest couples in my life that stood in front of us (the guy danced like he was a Sim). Oh, there were a lot of gay couples too (first show I’ve really been to where I noticed a lot of gay people. Usually I see more lesbians…not to say that homosexuals are a spectacle or anything!!). Anyway, they played til 11:15, and immediately came back on for an encore. Gawd, I love Ladytron. They’ve definitely shot up to my list of favorite artists. Ahhhh, I can’t wait to see them again!!!

Cat Power
ft. Appaloosa
Warfield, San Francisco

Tuesday, April 15, 2008
8:00pm to 11:15pm

Quick update! My first official show of the year--and it feels completely glorious to finally get back into the show groove by starting off with some good 'ol Cat Power!

We got there around 8:20 or so and the opener was playing. She sounded okay in some songs; reminded me of Bjork. Anisa said Bjork sounds better, and I agree. This girl danced all weird, and finished at around 8:45ish.

Cat Power finally came on at 9:20. LOVE HER TO DEATH! I basically didn't recognize any of the songs she sang because I haven't listened to her JukeBox album, but it's okay because her voice is still completely and utterly amazing, and she had new dance moves, which was entertaining. Anisa and I spotted a guy before the show who was sitting by himself and we thought omg that would be weird if he ended up coming by himself to see Cat Power. Turned out that that was actually the case. Pretty cool. I wanted to catch up to him and tell him how awesome I thought he was, but he left before we could get near him. Also, right when Cat Power came on, I got a huge wiff of mj smoke. Man the whole time it smelled like mj and cigarettes. The cigarettes were disgusting and made my allergies act up. =( The show was pretty much almost sold out.

Anyway! So Cat Power basically played til 11:15, with about a 10 minute break between the show and the encore. All her songs were super bluesy this time, which is fine by me, but I'm sad that I haven't had a chance to hear her old stuff in her old style live. I wonder if she'll ever end up going back to that style. She played "Metal Heart" one of my all time favs, but the style was so bluesy and completely different that I wouldn't have even recognized that song if I didn't know the lyrics to it. She played "The Greatest" also. I've realized that I get torn between what I love about musicians and concerts: I want to hear my favorite songs in their old form, but then it's so amazing to hear the artist sing those same songs completely differently because it shows his/her talent in how s/he can mix things up, and it's nice to have some spice and spontaneity in songs. So I don't know. Overall, loved the show. I love love love love love love love her to death. She is awesome and gorgeous and has one of the most unearthly beautiful voices I've ever heard in my life.
